Financial Impacts of Frost on the WA Grains Industry

GRDC Project CAG1

Contact: Garren Knell

Aim: to quantify the financial impact of frost on the WA Grains Industry and to give recommendations to industry on priorities for further research, development and extension to address the impacts of frost.

Background: The severe frost events of 1998 and 1999 led GRDC to initiate a frost research workshop (Perth, 14th August 2000). One of the outcomes of this workshop was that the WA Grains Industry did not know the financial cost of frost. ConsultAg was approached by GRDC to undertake the economic analysis.

Assessing Risk to Encourage Farm Change

GRDC Project HOR6

Completion Date 30th June 2003

Contact: Kim Povey

Aim: is to produce a learning package to demonstrate the concept of capital risk in simple terms, and explain how this can be used to make decisions relating to changes to farming enterprises.

Background: Tools for assessing exposure of capital to risk associated with change in a farm enterprise mix are vital for farm management in a climate of change. The GRDC is interested in proposals to deliver simple tools that will allow growers to assess their exposure to risk and that can be used to support decisions about how they may change their business to reduce risk exposure and realise new opportunities.

Precision Farming for Profit and Sustainability

Project No. CFG2

The Corrigin Farm Improvement group was successful in obtaining GRDC funding for research into precision agriculture. Their aim is to evaluate the benefits of farming according to productivity zones within paddocks to see if adopting variable rate technology is likely to improve whole farm profitability.

ConsultAg provides assistance to the Corrigin Farm Improvement group with research methodology, trial design, and coordinating other collaborators such as CSIRO, Department of Agriculture and UWA researchers.
